This question came from my recent survey. It can be overwhelming and confusing when you are working full time and therefore have so little time to build a new business. But quitting your day job might be your dream!
How do you start? Where do you start? How do you make the right decisions?
Where are you starting from?
Your 1st 5 actions will depend on where you are now. If you have no idea what type of business you want–who you want to sell to and what type of products you want to sell–then you have some preliminary work to do.
I have a blog post, What Should I Do?, that will help you.
Let’s assume you’re starting from scratch but have some basic idea of what you know and like. Here are your 1st 5 actions:
- Decide on a direction and a strategy
- Research keywords and niches
- Choose a domain name and web host
- Set up a website with WordPress
- Decide on a marketing strategy
Would you like to know what comes after that?
I explain more steps in my free guide, 13 Steps to Create a Successful Online Business. If you register there, you’ll also get 4 videos on topics which are the foundation for your online business:
- Getting more traffic
- Growing your list
- Create a product
- Holding events (usually webinars)
Get the 13 Steps plus 4 videos here.
Get support
Really, you’ll just flounder if you try to go it alone. It’s so easy to make a mistake and spend months, if not years, going in the wrong direction or spinning your wheels. Believe me, I know! If you’re working full time now, you should be able to put aside some money for coaching. I have 2 coaches and wouldn’t work without a coach.
Want to just test the waters?
If you’d like to learn more about online marketing first, have a place to ask questions, and have the opportunity for short, weekly sessions, I recommend my membership program, Reach the Stars Club.
This program has 3 components:
- Biweekly reports and worksheets on a new topic each time. You’ll go deep into specific processes that you need to know for successful online marketing.
- A private Facebook group where you can ask questions and get answers as you progress.
- Weekly Open Office Hours, where you can work with me for 1/2 hour, one on one.
If you want to learn how to create a profitable online business, this is the very least you should do. It’s priced so that anyone can afford it.

I really agree with you, especially with what you say about having support! Having that kind of foundation behind you can really help you succeed. Nice work! Thanks for the advice!
A great post and clearly a topic I get passionate about too. If you hire a coach, he should be a person who understands the business in open-minded mindset.Business is everything that makes or has a potential to make profit by changing value to value.
I’m thinking about quitting my day job this year and putting up my own online business but I don’t know yet how or where to start. Good thing I found this blog post. It’s a step forward. Thanks!
I’m on the fifth stage now — deciding on a marketing strategy. I might need a coach on this soon.
