  1. An audience
  2. A relationship with your audience
  3. Offers to put in front of your audience

 

It doesn’t sound so hard, does it? But I see online entrepreneurs having problems with all 3 areas. This is important because if you miss the mark in any one area, you won’t have a thriving business.

Stick to targeted followers only!

Lately, in various social media venues — LinkedIn and Facebook mainly — I’ve seen people request exchanges of followers, such as:

  • Let’s all comment on each others’ blog posts!
  • Let’s all like each others’ Facebook pages!
  • Let’s all follow each other on Twitter!

While these follow fests have some limited value, for the most part they’re useless. Why do I say that?

You get lots of other website designers following your Facebook page and it feels good to see the numbers go up. But it’s a false feeling. It’s like a dog chasing its own tail — round and round, yet not getting anywhere.
