Everyone is talking about social media marketing, so I want to start with an overview. In future posts, I’ll go in more detail.
What is social media?
Social media is any online resource that lets people easily share content with each other. For example, it’s hard to share a printed newspaper article with others, but it takes just a click to share an item on Facebook.
The most popular social media sites are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, at least in the United States (which is where I live).
While YouTube didn’t start out as social media, it is now. You can easily share your favorites with others–and it’s big!
So let’s examine the big 4 in brief.
At over 800 million users (see www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics), Facebook is huge. It’s a great option when you want to connect with individuals, rather than businesses. As a social entrepreneur or solopreneur, create a Facebook page and regularly post new content, links to your blog, and photos.
Twitter has 254 million registered users, although its size is harder to count (see www.mediabistro.com/alltwitter/how-many-twitter-users_b13110). Twitter has been called a micro-blogging platform; it lets you send out up to 140 characters to people who follow you.
By following people who might be interested in you, you may get them to follow you back. Regularly post new content, with links to outside content and your blog.
LinkedIn has over 100 million users and is designed for businesses. While you can post updates like on Facebook and Twitter, in my opinion, its strength is in its groups. Start joining relevant groups and contributing to gain a reputation. Then start creating connections, which are like Facebook friends.
YouTube has over 490 million users. It’s is a little different from the others. Of course, it’s a place to post videos. But because people can sign up for your channel and share your videos, it’s also a type of social media.
Most importantly, it’s the #3 site overall (after Google and Facebook) and the #2 search engine (after Google). Create a channel and start uploading videos! Be sure to put your URL in the description box.
Social media marketing strategy
To be successful at social media marketing, you need to know a lot more about it, including tools to automate posting and techniques to engage people. Look forward to more posts on the topic! But as with any marketing strategy, the key is to come up with a strategy, be consistent with it, evaluate it, and make adjustments as necessary.
