In an earlier blog post, “What should you write in your free report?” I explained how to decide on a topic and some formats you can use.
But some of my students are still having problems writing a free report. In a recent class, we had a discussion about this topic. Some great ideas came out and I thought I’d share them with you.
Compile blog posts
Do you have a good selection of blog posts? Put them together into a free report. Few people will come to your site and read through weeks or months of blog posts, but if you collect them in an organized fashion, they’ll get great benefit.
Here are the steps:
- Decide on your topic and write an attractive title.
- In Microsoft Word (or a substitute), create a table of contents.
- Create chapter titles or just headings that match the table of contents.
- Copy and paste the blog posts into their appropriate section. Organize them so the text flows well.
- Write a short intro and conclusion.
- Add links to your Sales/Services page or to specific sales pages.
- Convert to PDF.
Break up a book
One of my students has written a book and his website is partly a way to sell the book.
If you, too, have a longer document, you can take selections from it and turn it into a free report. You can also offer a free chapter. This is very commonly done, even for books published by major publishers.
Copy and paste your existing content into a document and turn it into a PDF. Also follow the steps above for creating a title and organizing the content. Continue reading →

Ask subscribers to forward your email newsletter to others
At the top of my email newsletter, I now include this statement:
Do you know someone who could use the information in this newsletter? You probably do! Please forward this email to social entrepreneurs and solopreneurs who want to learn how to create an online business. If you received this email from a friend or colleague, sign up to get it regularly at www.changetheworldmarketing.com.
Did you join my list that way?
A statement like this can bring you a steady stream of new subscribers.
Refine your LinkedIn interactions
I mentioned in my last post about list-building that I was using LinkedIn. I joined some LinkedIn groups that I thought would have members interested in what I have to say. But I discovered some groups were better than others.
For example, I joined the WAHM (Work at Home Mothers) group. It turns out that most members represent existing companies (such as Avon and Arbonne) and those companies don’t let their sales force sell from their own websites for branding reasons.
On the other hand, I found that social entrepreneur and solopreneur groups were more useful.
Nevertheless, LinkedIn is time-consuming and I obviously didn’t get big results from it.
Work with other business owners
I’ve now made a couple of inquiries to business owners who work in the marketing and social entrepreneurs niches and we’ll see what happens. Often, you can help your own readers by linking to outside resources and if two people link to each other, they each help their readers plus gain from the link.

I recently had an interaction with someone on a social entrepreneurs’ LinkedIn group and he then sent me a message saying he wanted to know “when building a commerce site on WordPress, how is PAYMENT security handled? How are other general and security issues handled when WordPress is used as a business site?”
I answered him in an email and then decided to rewrite the content as a blog post, so you could read it, too. It’s basic information that every social entrepreneur who want to get online needs to know.
