Do you need to quickly get out a low-cost product that you can sell?
I just sent out a survey asking my subscribers what their needs are. One of the questions was,
“If you could wave a magic wand and get me to answer one specific question about your online business, what would it be?”
I’ll try to answer all of these questions over time, but this one jumped out at me:
“What are some easy to create low-cost products I can offer for sale on my website? I am horrible at creating content (creatively & technically).I want to focus on 1. A self-care program for people with chronic illness as well as 2. Finding purpose again when chronic illness derails your life.”
A topic like this can easily make a high-demand product because so many people need it. When you have knowledge like this, you must share it with others!
Here are 3 ideas for quick, low-cost products that you can create in 2-5 hours.
1. Ask someone to interview you
Ask a friend or colleague to interview you about your topic. In advance, give the interviewer 3 questions to ask, so you’ll know what to say. Make the interview short– let’s say 5-15 minutes long–but substantive. You can sell this for $7 – $27.
Technology: If the 2 of you are in the same room, you can record using Audacity, which is free. It also has editing capabilities, in case you flub a line (I always flub several). Editing is just a matter of selecting the section on the audio timeline and clicking the Cut icon. I explain Audacity briefly and give the download link in “34 essential software, tools, and plug-ins I use for my online business.”
If the 2 of you are not in the same room, I recommend Zoom, the service I use for online meetings and webinars. For 40 minutes or less, it’s free! You can find Zoom here. While Zoom can make videos if you have a webcam, it also creates an MP3.
Once you have the MP3, you need a place to store it. I recommend Amazon’s S3 service. If that’s too much for you to deal with now, just click Media, Add New in your WordPress dashboard and upload it. Once it’s uploaded, click the Edit link and you’ll see the URL. Copy that URL and paste it on a page. Then direct people to that page after they make a purchase.
2. Write some short points and record an MP3
You don’t need to find an interviewer. You can simply write up some notes on your topic–something that people really need to know–and start talking. You can sell this product for the same $7 to $27 for a 5 to 15-minute audio file. If your topic is technical, feel free to go longer but remember that it’s more profitable for you to create multiple short products than one longer one.
Technology: Use the same technology as for idea #1.
3. Write some points–a checklist worksheet, or tips list
Write up some points — worksheet, checklist or just 10 tips. In order to do this in 2-5 hours, you want it to be no more than 3 pages. For a checklist, 1 page is just fine. After you type it up, get someone on Fiverr.com to make it look pretty and create a PDF. I recommend that you ask them to use Word and give you the Word document, so you can make edits if necessary. It’s easy to export from Word to PDF right from within Word.
Of course, you won’t get it back in 2-5 hours, but you won’t be doing the work yourself, so they aren’t your 2-5 hours.
Technology: Upload the PDF to your WordPress media library and get the URL as I described for #1. Create a page and type out the document’s title. (Make it enticing!) Then link to the URL. Direct buyers to this page after they make the purchase.
If you haven’t created any products yet, take this challenge. Get this done in the next 2 weeks! Then promote it as hard as you can.
